Statistics of PTSD in The U.S.
Experiencing trauma in ones life is more common than it is uncommon. An estimate of 60% of men and 50% of women will have a traumatic experience at least once in his or her lifetime. However, a much smaller percent are affected by the agonizing symptoms of PTSD. According to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, seven to eight percent of people in the general public will experience PTSD at some point in their lives. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is most likely to develop if you:
- Have a family history of mental health problems
- Recently lost a loved one
- Have stressful life changes
- Are a woman
- Are poorly educated
- Are younger
- Drink alcohol
- Had an earlier life threatening trauma or event during childhood
